Defining the Culture at Social Tables
It’s not every day that a company has the opportunity to define its culture but last week the Social Tables team did just that. I pulled our entire team (from full-time employees to summer interns) into a small conference room and had everyone rattle off the values that were important to them. We ended up with a list of about 30 words and soon enough patterns started to emerge.
Instead of picking 5 cliche words to describe our culture we decided to use phrases that captures those words and much more. Here is what we ended up with:
- “Changing the way events are planned and attended” to describe our innovative approach to product development
- “No because Yes if” to describe our can do attitude
- “High risk, high reward” to describe why we’re doing a startup
- “Ship all day, party all night” to describe our work ethic and team mentality
- “Fail fast and often” to describe our entrepreneurial and agile culture
The next step in this exercise is to make sure these values are at the core of everything we do. Apart from throwing them up on a wall (which — don’t worry — we totally did that) we will weave them into our hiring process, company brand and performance reviews.
I really believe that “the soft stuff” differentiates a company as much if not more than anything else.
